TechCrunch reported that AllTrails, a growing hiking app, raised $75M. Click here for the full article. Prior to hiking, I generally visit a website to find a trail map and download a screenshot to take with me on my phone in case coverage is bad. Sometimes I google the location to find out about trail closings, wildlife, and other news. AllTrails aims to provide a single point for relevant information for “outdoorsy folks”.
My take: I tried AllTrails soon after it was launched and didn’t find it that useful. However, I just downloaded the app to give it another try and found the information on some local trails to be more relevant and accurate based on my experience. I am assuming the “crowd” using the app is much larger now, so the crowdsourced information is better. I will try the app for the next few hikes and report back on how I find it.
