Some gifts invite you to get outside and explore. Our daughter and son-in-law gave me an INCLY geology toolkit in 2024 or 25, and we’ve since used its tools to examine small fossils, split rocks, and explore places where collecting is permitted.
The magnifying glass helps us examine small finds closely, while the rock pick hammer, chisels, and shovel have each proven useful. We’ve used tools from the kit in local creeks and at the Montour Preserve fossil pit in Pennsylvania, and we’ve also worked with rocks back home.
The full kit weighs a lot, so we usually choose the tools we expect to need and pack them in our daypack. Here’s what we’ve found useful, how the tools have held up, and why I think this kit makes a thoughtful gift for someone who enjoys rocks and fossils.

The Tools We Use Most
The rock pick hammer and gloves are the pieces we use most from this kit. The magnifying glass (not pictured) has been useful for examining small fossils. It lets us see details that are difficult to spot without magnification.

The rock pick hammer has come in handy at several fossil sites, and we’ve used the chisels to split rocks both on site and back at home. The shovel is another useful tool when digging is permitted.
Having these tools together gives us choices for different outings. We select what we need based on the location, the activity, and the site’s rules.

Choosing What to Carry
The main drawback of this kit is its weight when you carry everything together. For our fossil outings, we typically select the tools we expect to use and transfer them to our daypack.
That approach lets us bring what suits the location without carrying the entire kit every time. A magnifying glass can help us examine small fossils, while other tools depend on the collecting opportunities and what the site permits.

How the Tools Have Held Up
The tools have seemed well made in our use. We haven’t noticed wear beyond what we would expect from tools coming into contact with rock.
We store our kit indoors between outings. Our experience reflects using selected tools during fossil-hunting trips and working with rocks at home, rather than daily, continuous use.
A Gift for Someone Who Loves Rocks and Fossils
Receiving this kit from my daughter and son-in-law made it personal, and using the tools has made it practical. For someone who enjoys examining fossils and working with rocks, I think it is a great gift idea.
The main consideration is whether the recipient visits places where these tools are permitted. We’ve found the kit useful because we can choose individual tools for each outing and still use the hammer and chisels at home.
For our interests, it’s a gift we continue to use.

Check the Rules Before Using Collecting Tools
We choose which tools to bring based on what each location permits. Permission to look for fossils does not necessarily include permission to dig, split rocks, or remove specimens.
Before an outing, check the site’s current collecting rules and ask staff if anything is unclear. At locations where tools or collecting are prohibited, you can still enjoy examining fossils, taking photographs, and leaving discoveries in place.
This kit has given us useful tools for enjoying an interest we already love. Although we usually leave some pieces at home to manage the weight, we’ve made room for these tools in our fossil-hunting daypack.
